The club has been conducting the early swimming training for babies and toddlers using the FREDS SWIM ACADEMY method since 2007. The programme manager is Ana Sršen, the holder of the FREDS SWIM ACADEMY licence for Croatia. Our experienced and professional coaches help children of different ages and abilities to enjoy water, improve their health and learn how to swim.
The aim of the swimming training programme is to gradually and in a way appropriately adjusted to each development phase provide children with an experience of success and the feeling of safety in water, necessary for them to learn how to swim and to acquire a positive attitude to water they will treasure for life.
Regular and systematic exercise in water enables faster development of children who do it in comparison to the children of the same age who do not swim.
Programe je odobrilo Ministarstvo znanosti i obrazovanja i Agencija za odgoj i obrazovanje. Treneri i klub su dobitnici četiri državne nagrade za poduku plivanja.
About the method
FREDS SWIM ACADEMY is a specific swimming teaching method adjusted to different age groups and conducted using the three-step-learn-to-swim-system involving the swim ring SWIMTRAINER.
The aim of the swimming training programme is to gradually and in a way appropriately adjusted to each development phase provide children with an experience of success and the feeling of safety in water, necessary for them to successfully learn how to swim and to acquire a positive attitude to water they will treasure for life (FREDS SWIM ACADEMY, 2009-2011).
Learning to swim early is important for the integral biological, psychological and social development of a child. Swimming positively impacts breathing, the cardiovascular system, bones, muscles and body thermoregulation. If a child is provided with an opportunity to move in water before it learns to walk, it will move in water by pushing forward using both legs simultaneously. This movement will later develop into something similar to breaststroke. If children start with swimming at the age of twelve months, they will move imitating walking, i.e. alternating feet. When they start with early swimming training, children get used to floating in the prone position, i.e. to the basic swimming position.
Swimming maintains and develops the innate swimming reflex as a natural means of moving in water. Swimming positively influences overall child’s development. A child gets accustomed to independent movements in water – it moves forwards and backwards, it halts, rotates and paddles. Play and movement in water, accompanied by an increased breathing rate result in the improvement of endurance. Warm water makes a child feel satisfied and relaxed. It gets some exercise and therefore sleeps better and calmer. Swimming is performed in the horizontal position thus activating all major muscles groups. Regular and systematic exercise in water enables faster development of children who do it in comparison to the children of the same age who do not swim.
Our FREDS SWIM ACADEMY programme includes the following levels:
It has been proved that swimming has positive effects on physical, psychological, social and emotional development of children and that children who have been included in the swimming programme from the earliest age develop faster in comparison to their peers who are not included in programmes of exercising in water (Šajber, 2005).
Swimming programmes for babies and children enable children to learn how to swim before starting primary school. Swimming training is also highly important because it reduces the number of persons drowned, children being the most common victims. As far as the psychological development of children is concerned, acquiring the skill of swimming contributes to a child’s positive self-image. Children who swim also have numerous opportunities for taking up other swimming or water sports.
SWIMTRAINER enables children to have fun while learning to swim in compliance with the highest safety standards. It is a specially designed swim ring, carefully adjusted to child’s age and swimming abilities and it provides safety in each phase of swimming training.
SWIMTRAINER is open at back and the inner part of the ring has inflatable pads on which a child lies while safety straps and clip fasteners prevent a child from slipping through.
SWIMTRAINER advantages include:
- placing a child in an optimal prone position;
- SWIMTRAINER has an inner and outer inflatable chamber and safety vents providing optimal safety for children;
- a child is secured by adjustable inflatable safety straps preventing a child from slipping through
- fast and simple to put on and take off
There are three colours, i.e. sizes adjusted to the three-step-learn-to-swim-system:
Red SWIMTRAINER is recommended for children from 3 months to 4 years of age and is intended for babies and toddlers of an approximate weight from 8 kg to 18 kg. It is also suitable for children with special needs. It is the largest of the three SWIMTRAINERS, has the best buoyancy and enables excellent stability in water. It is used as a helping tool in adaptation to water and it incites and facilitates the so-called frog reflex in babies and infants, enabling them to acquire and internalise the correct pushing frog-like leg movement. After children acquire and internalise the correct leg movement and become able to move freely and reach a certain point changing their direction of movement – the orange SWIMTRAINER is used (depending on progress, this is usually possible approximately at the age of two).
Orange SWIMTRAINER is recommended for children from 2 to 6 years of age and is intended for children of an approximate weight from 15 kg to 30 kg. It is the middle-sized SWIMTRAINER used in the three-step-learn-to-swim-system. It is less buoyant in comparison to the red SWIMTRAINER and provides greater freedom of arms movement. Due to less buoyancy (resulting from less air in the SWIMTRAINER) the stability in water is decreased, which consequently requires more effort to keep balance. It is used to train coordination of legs and arms movement.
Yellow SWIMTRAINER is recommended for children from 4 to 8 years of age, i.e. for children of an approximate weight from 20 kg to 36 kg and is intended for advanced learners. It is the smallest SWIMTRAINER in the three-step-learn-to-swim-system. It provides the least buoyancy, i.e. greatest freedom of legs and arms movement and the least stability, which consequently requires maximum effort in keeping balance in water. In the process of swimming training, the air is gradually reduced (let out), first from the outer, and later from the inner chamber, which additionally reduces buoyancy and gradually leads to independent swimming.
